The Munich correspondent of. the
Paris "Siecle" sends a curious story of a
student who, in order to wiir a bet, swal
lowed fire silk neckties. The event took
place in a beerhouse in Schwanberg.
The conditions were that' the neckties
should be cut into pieces, and dressed
as a salad with oil, salt, vinegar, and
pepper, and this original mixture should
be swallowed within, six minutes..: The
student performed this difficult opera
tion in 5 J- minutes, aud washed down
the "salad" with no less than ten litres
of beer. Ho, therefore, won the bet.
DONT COUGH.—Belief can be obtained
immediately. Use "BEATING'S COUGH
LOZENGES"—well known as the utterly un

at once check the cough and remove the
cause—without any after effect; the most deli
cate can therefore talco them. One Lozenge
alone gives case—one or two at bedtime en
sures rest. ' Sold everywhere" in tins, 131d.
