R.A.A.F. PICTURE SHOW
At Mount Barker on Thursday
evening Flying Officer McLaughlin,
who addressed the local committee'
recently, sponsored a motion picture
entertainment at the institute, for
which Messrs. Daniel Bros, kindly
loaned and operated their machine.
Such films as "Sky Fighters," "Lon
don can take it," etc., proved' very
interesting to a large audience. In
troduced by Cr. Simper (chairman of
the district council), F.O. McLough
lin spoke for seme time on the
R.A.A.F. He said that many people
bought buttons and talked, confident
in the thought that victory would i
come automatically. They had to re
member, however, that they were !
facing the deadliest war machine in
history and that indications were
for a long war. Australia -was, fort
unately, far away from what they had
seen in "London can take it." The
air force empire scheme contracted
for Australia to supply 20.000 air
crew by 1943, and, while the$. were
well up to their commitments, ar
rangement _ had to be made for the
future for 'this purpose, as well as
keep up reinforcements to Egypt, Mal
aya and in Australia. At first a high
standard of education had been set,
hut now things had settled down
type of enlistee for the R.A.A'.F. was
made more prominent. What they
were now seeking was young chaps
of 18 years—17 and 16, to train for
the future, and these would not be
sent out on service until at least
19 years of age. From now on, seven
out of nine enlistees would be fully
trained in Australia, and the ages ,
mentioned would do part of their
training at home and at night
schools, so other work would not be
interrupted and the lads would go
into camp further advanced than
would otherwise he possible. The
Commonwealth received £2000 for
each trainee under the empire
scheme from the British Government.
The air force had 06 avenues of oc
cupation, and these were being re
duced, for men by employment of
wometaj, 200 of whom had enlisted
during the month. F.O. McDoughlin
was thanked by Messrs. Simper and
F. C. Disher at the close of the pro
gramme. A collection to defray hall
hire was taken up, and realised £3.
The balance will go to the goodwill
society funds.
