The Chilling Car.
A LARGE number of persons have (says the
Tenfterfield 8tar) visited the railway station
during the last few days to inspect the new
chilling car for carrying dead meat, which
was sent up here by Messrs. Hudson Bros,
and is the first completed by them for busi
ness purposes, the one which has boon here
previously being only onsntructed as an
experiment. The present car is divided into
two compartments and budt with double
walls and roof, the snace between them being
occupied-by dry air boxes lined of non-con
ducting paper, while tho. double doors,
walls, and roof are made air-cight with
thick felt and paper. , The meat-the mut
ton in caresses and the beef in qdiarloes-will
not be hung by hooks as was the method
previously employed, but will be slung from "
the roof by stout bands of webbing and thus
be prevented from bruising each other by the
oscillation of the car. The ice employed is
contained in four cases placed at the ends of
the. two compartments, and the drip from it
is utilised by means of crossed wires as de
scribed in. a previous notice. The carrying
power of the car is 13 tone, for which it is
estimated that a ton of ice will be required
during the journey from Tenterfield to
Sydn^ey, during which an average temperature
of 40 deg. will be maintained. A shipment
is announced to leave this morning consisting
of 20"arcbases of cattle and 80 of sheep,
which: will' not be thile full capacity of this
new and ingenious !' refrigerator on wheels."
