A BRIDOE BOOK.
In "Bridge," by '"Templar," a recent ad
dition to tbe "Club Series" (Messrs. George
Bell and Sons) of card and table games,
the author begins by acknowledging his ob
ligations to Sir. Dalton's work on the game.
Then introductory chapters describe the
mode of playing, and the mode of scoring;
and give tbe text of the "Laws of Bridge, as
played at the Portland Ghib." Next "Tem
plar" discusses the "declaration." He lays
down the broad fundamental principle that
"the dealer should generally act on the bf
fenSive^with the view of winning the tame'
in tone hand, or,.at all events, of making
a good score towards it. He afterwards:
shows how the application of this principle
is affected and modified by the state of the
