BRITISH ASSOCIATION
WALLSEND PLATTSBURG
The series of football matches in con-
nection, with the competitions promoted
by the Wallsend and District Association
were moved forward another stage on Sat-
rrday, one of the competitions, viz., the
Barlow Schools' Contest being completed,
the final being played between the West
Wallsend A, and Wallsend A teams, the
former winning. Other matches played
were the seniors Royals v Weston, Fourth
Grade, Royals v. Wanderers, and third
grade Royals v. West Wallsend. There
were two other matches arranged, viz;,
fourth grade Mazeppas v. Merewether, and
third grade Mignonette v. Winding Creek
but these did not eventuate, the Mere-
wether forfeiting to Mazoepa, and the
Winging Creek doing likewise to Mignon-
ette. These and other forfeits lately re-
corded indicate a closing in of the games,
and an approach of the semi finals, the
clubs occupying a low position on the lad-
der of success realising the futility of ex-
pending a lot of energy for no possible
result. For Saturday's play fine weather
prevailed and consequently the games
were viewed by a large number of spec-
tators.
Play commenced with the Barlows
Schools final between West Wallsend A
and Wallsend A, which was played on
Wallsend Park in the morning, both
teams having a lot of supporters. The
contestants were West Wallsend: Coutts,
Coates, Regan, Oughton, Sullivan,
McCurry, McLaughlin, Manderson, Ward,
Mutton; and Kaiser. Wallsend: Bower,
Walker, Wanless, Johnson, Ford, E.
Walker, Harris, Means, Gray, Steel, and
Maddison. Mr. B. Praten was referee.
From the kick-off the lads made the
game very willing. After a spell of even
play, in which Stel and Maddison for
Wallsend, and McLaughlin for West Wall-
send were perhaps the most conspicuous,
an attack by West Wallsend was well
cleared by Ford. Following this attack
came another, in which Kaiser made a
fine shot, which Bower saved well. A
good concerted rush by Wallsend resulted
in Harris making a good attempt, which
just-missed the goal. Ward secured, and
made an excellent run, and a good try to
score, but Bower was too wary. Even
play followed, after which Wallsend for-
ced the play, but without success. Then
Mutton and Kaiser put in some pretty
play on the right wing, and were work-
ing well up-field, when Johnson saved
the situation by booting the sphere into
midfield. Shortly after, the Westy boys
made a collective onslaught on the Walls-
end goal, out of which, in his effort to do
something to save the situation, one or
the Wallesend lads unfortunately put the
ball into the net, thus inadvertently
scoring for West Wallsend. More give-
and-take play, in which Coates (W.W.),
Gray, and Wanless (W.) were in evidence,
followed, no further score being made up
to half-time. In the second half West
Wallsend mde the pace, and obtained
two corner kicks in quick succession,
from the second of which McLaughlin
kicked the second goal for West Walls-
end. Shortly after came West Walls-
end's third goal, this time through the
agency of Coutts. The Wallsend boys
made good efforts to equalise matters,
but were unsuccessful, and the game
ended - West Wallsend 3, to Wallsend
nil. The winning team have during this
season put up what would appear some-
thing of a record, only one goal having
been scored by their opponents, while
their list of goals total no less than 64.
The other match on Wallsend Park
was that of the Royals v. Weston (sen-
lors). The teams were:--Royal: Jones,
B. Pratten, Davies, Patterson, Roy, Mor-
gan, Hepplewhite, H. Pratten, Dowson,
R. Ledbury, and J. Ledbury. Weston:-
Bullerwell, McNaughton, Cartwright,
Cook, Ashman, Lavender, Jowett, Bunn,
Jennings, O'Brien, and Barnes, Mr. T.
Westwood was referee. This was an
evenly-contested game, and the pace was
fast from the word go. First one end,
and then the other, the ball had a merry
time, both "goalers" being provided with
occupation in warding off attacks, Bul-
lerwell getting perhaps the most of this.
The half was nearly through, when Roy,
for the Royals, notched the first goal. In
the second half, the Royals pressed hard,
Cartwright being instrumental in warding
off a strong attack. Then came Weston's
turn, and after some good combined
workh, Jennings found the net, and made
honours easy. A smart save by Jones
was effected during this half, the shot
being made very fast and low by Jen-
nings. From this to the end, although
strenuous efforts were imde by both
sides, no further score was made, the
game ending in a draw, after all even
and for the most part, a very fast game,
in which all of the players were out to
win.
On Federal Park the first game decided
was the fourth grade match, Minmi Wan-
derers v. Wallsend Royals. The teams
were :--Wanderers : Moyle, Smith, Dixon,
Rowe, Newton, Mulholland, Daniels, Clark,
Cramp, Harvey, and Harvey. Royals:
Shaw, O'Donnell, Boxer, Russell, Donkin,
Lewis, Sheldon, O'Brien, Lonergan, Ward
and Treay. Mr. J. Parkes was referee.
This was an even game. During the first
half Smith, of the Wanderers, had to
knock off, owing to an old leg trouble
making itself apparent, and making it im-
possible for him to continue. From this
out his side played with ten men only.
The end of the first half saw scoring hon-
ours even. Mulholland having scored for
Wanderers, and Lonergan for royals. the
second half had not been long in pro-
gress when Mulholland notched the se-
cond goal for Wanderers by an excellent
kick. Royals then made matters lively
and Treay made an effort, the ball strik-
ing the bar. Three corners to Royals in
quick succession followed, all of which
were well directed efforts, particularly the
second, which landed and rolled along the
top of the bar. Moyle in goal averted
the danger of the others, and did good
serviec in warding off two other good at-
tempts that followed directly afterwards.
From this on the Royals pressed hard, but
were unable to break through the de-
fence of the Wanderers, or to overcome
their bad luck in getting the ball just over
instead of under the bar, and when the
whistle blew the Wanderers were the win-
ers by two goals to one. Of the players
for the Wanderers Moyle, Mulholland,
Dixon, and Cramp were perhaps the most
conspicuous, and for the losers Ward,
Treay, Lonergan, Lewis. and Donkin were
busy players.
The other Federal Park match was the
third grade contest between the Wallsend
Royals and the West Wallsend teams. The
players were :--Royals : Rizzoli, Ledbury,
Barr, C. Kemp, Chiarelli, O'Brien, Roy,
Richardson, Smith, Davies, and R. Kemp,
West Wallsend : Sinclair, Muir, Brennan,
Newell, Hillary, Lewis, Kaiser, Knudson,
West, Brown, and McLaughlin. Mr. R.
White was referee. At the onset this
gave promise of a good contest, the first
part of the first half being very even.
Richardson scored the first goal for
Royals after a piece of good combined
play by the forwards. Then Kemp got
a corner, which he placed well, and Smith
scored number 2. West Wallsend then
took charge for a short time, their efforts
being frustrated by Rizzoli. The ball
was quickly taken to the other end, and
Kemp, placing well from a corner, Roy
added goal number 3 for Royals. Mid-
field play followed. West Wallsend for-
wards getting possession, carried the ball
to the Royal goal, but failed to find the
net. Through a bit of good combined
play by Richardson, Smith, and Roy, the
scene of action changed, but the shot for
goal failed, although a good attempt. A
further effort by the same trio
was smartly saved by Sinclair.
Hillary then made a good run
and took the sphere well down the field,
it being returned rapidly, and Roy, get-
tng possession, made a good try, but
failed. West Wallsend then took charge,
and after a bit of smart play scored
their first and only goal, Brennan being
the scorer. A quick change saw an at-
tack of Royals well saved by Sinclair,
only to be followed by a corher to Kemp,
who placed well, which the West Walls-
end backs and halves kept out for a
time, until Kemp, getting an opportun-
ity, added goal No. 4. Roy made the
next effort, but missed, and Kemp, get-
ting to the ball, passed well to Smith,
who made the scores 5 to 1, at which
the half-time interval found them. In
the beginning of the second half the
West Wallsend players made strong ef-
forts to add to their scores, but Rizzoli,
in goal, was eqaul to everything sent in
to him, and Barr, Ledbury, and O'Brien
too strong in defence for them to break
down. A fast wing run by Kemp, a
smart pass to Smith, and goal No.6 was
scored. Then Richardson got a corner,
which, being well placed, and Smith be-
ing in gthe right place, goal No. 7 re-
sulted. Directly after Smith had two
shots for goal, but was unsuccessful
with either. From the kick out of the
second of these, the ball was taken to
midfield, here Kemp, on right wing,
secured, and taking it well down, follow-
ed up a good run with a good shot,
which found the goal and made the
score 8 to 1. The same player shortly
after added another gonal, and the game
from that on assumed the appearance
of a practice rather than a competition
matcht. The West Wallsend team shortly
before the time to finish gave up the
game. It being then to hopeless task. The
match thus resulted in a win for Royals
by 9 to 1. Of the players, suffice it to
say that the winners played well
throughout, with good combination and
free of any sign of selfishness. For the
losers the players generally kicked well,
and at times some very neat footwork
was shown, but the passing on many
occasions was faulty, and their combin-
ation not equal to that of tlhir oppon-
ents.
Two matches were played at Adams-
town, Adamstown Rosebud Seniors meet-
ing the Minmi Clippers and Adamstown
Rosebuds second grade meeting West
Wallsend. Both resulted in a draw, the
first-named with a score of 1 goal each,
and the latter with, 2 goals each. Mr.
M. Lamb refereed the senior match and
Mr. J. Drury the other.
At Dudley the Wallsend Nationals 4th
grade defeated Dudley by 2 goals to 1.
