ATHLETICS.
Skinner, of ScBootland, and Suthorland, of
New Zealand, wrestled recently at oAuck
land for a stake of £40 and the champion
ship. The conditions ware beet of five styles
-oatchn.as-catch.oan, Oumberland, Gcteco.
Roman, collar-and-elbow, and Cornish and
Devonshire, one fall in etch. In the first
(Oumberland), 8kinner boat Suthorland; in
the next (catch-as.catch.ean), the Scottish
representative was defeated; but in
eollar.and.elbow, Skinner threw his man in
good style. In the Gr:c:o-Romon style, the
advantage was with autherland, who evi
dently preferred ground wresting, Shinner's
forte being leg wrestling. 'this made
matters even, and in the last style (Oornish
and Devonshiro), considerable excitement
was aroused, the competitors wrestling for 20
minutes, until Skinner cleon buttooked the
local man, and thus won the championship
and stake.
Frank Slavin, writing to his wife from
Klondyko, says that gold is as plentiful there
as pennies are in London. Everything is
terribly dear, however. Drinks and cigars
are 2e Id each, and champagne £4 per bottle.
According to Slavln, the last boat that left
here about three weeks ago took 11 tons of
gold, and there are 16 tons to go on the river
boat that goes next woeek. There can be no
exaggeration; it is the richest field that has
cver been known, but the difficulty is pro.
visioning and getting the gold into camp.
There are men who were working in saloons
a few weehks ago, and who are now million
nires, and with a little olunck any man may be
oome the same. They hatve taken a million
out of a ton-foot square: it is impossible to
credit the wealth of the fields.
Dummy Winters, who left Sydney for
London nearly 15 months ago, is evidently a

South Africa.

Jaee. Hurphy, a well-known Australian
pugilist, died in South Africa recently at the
early age of 26 years. He was an excep
tionally olever fightor, and during his stay on
the Rand he beat Holloway, Malone,
Lachie Thompson, and several others. His
death has occasioned genuine regret through
out the whole of South Afrine.
