jpbn developers to
pielp community'
(The Qucanbcyan City Council will
require land developers to contribute
to-; the' provision of community
amenities and facilities, following a
recent decision by the NSW Minister
fof Planning and Environment, Mr
Sheahan.
MrSheahan has granted the council
permission to use Section 94 of the
Environmental Planning and
Assessment Act. This states that if a
development is likely to lead to a
demand for community facilities, a
council has the power to ask for either
land or money for community facili
ties tg be given as a condition of that
development.
;A spokesman for Queanbeyan
Council said yesterday that the
council would be asking developers
for a contribution based on the
amount of land being subdivided.
Mr Sheahan said some of the recent
growth in Canberra had carried over
to Queanbcyan, leading to an in
creased demand for community
facilities and recreation areas in
Queanbcyan.
"If new development creates new
demand, it is fair that the developers
contribute to the cost of meeting it,"
Mr Sheahan said.
Most NSW councils had taken up
their option to charge the levy as a
condition of approval for develop
ment, he said.
