:STOP PRESS
LONDON, October 22.
The wisdom of General Gamelin's
policy of withdrawal on the Western
front is shown by what has occurred
in the last few days, states a message
from Paris. The bad weather of the
last week has caused not only the
Rhine to rise, but the rivers be
tween the Saar and the Moselle have
overflowed their banks, and the land
on either side is under water. If tlhe
French had kept their original posi
tions they would have had consider
able trouble in getting up supplies
and reinforcements over the flooded
areas. Now, as a result of the rains,
the Germans have to bring up their
equipment ever the battered and
empty no-man's land between the two
lines.
The-.Havas Agency says that the
German fortified = lines beyond the
Rhlne are threatened by the floods,
and from Luxembourg comes the re
port that the Moselle has overflowed
its banks and the German trenehes on
the right bank are already flooded and
useless.

Farmers and fishermen in North
Jutland report that unidentified war
ships mot in a battle off thle coast.
There are no further details.
Farmers watching from North Jut
land say that they saw a naval ves
sel, either a submarine or a torpedo
boat, intercept a steamer. Two large
vessels appeared and fired on the
'.maller vessel for 15 minutes. The
steamer escaped, followed by the ves
sel which intercepted it. The war
ships later disappeared to the north.
