SYDNEY, Wednesday -Twelve
f 13 stopwork meetings neld in Aus
ralian ports have endorsed the stand
taken by tie General Secretary (Mr.
eialy) and Assistant General sec
retary (Mr. ltoach) on the Steve
doring Industry Commission issue.
By an eight to one majority a
stopwork meeting of Sydney water
side workers to-day endorsed the
stand of the Federation's Federal
Couneil, that Messrs. Healy and
Roach should continue to be their
representatives on the Stevedoring
tndustrv Commission.
An amendment by A.L.P. indus
trial group supporters, that Messrs.
Heaily and Roach be replaced on
the commission, was defeated.
Sydney ,waterside workers com
prise about a third of the federa
tions' total membership. ,
Thus, with the decisions maide in
the 11 other ports, about half of
the federation's 23,1100 members so
far have supported Messrs. Healy
and Roach.
On May 12 Federal Cabinet de
cided to remove Messrs. Healy and
Roach from the commission be
cause they would not give assur
stces that they would obey its .dn
etatons. . . - -.
"No Real Division"
Mr. Healy said to-night that the
Sydney vote showed there was no
real division in the federation.
Stopwork meetings were being
held in Australian ports. It was
likely -to-be.another fortnight be
fore all meetings were completed.
"So far, of stopwork- meetings
held in 13 ports, 12 have endorsed
the Federal Council's decision and
one has voted against it," he added.
Branches that have supported the
council's decision are Sydney water
side workers, Sydney mechanical
branch, Port Kembla, Bowen, Glad
stone, Bundierg, Townsville.
Cairns, Rockhampton, Mackay
(Queensland), Smithton (Tasmania).
and Newcastle coaltrimmers.
Newcastle waterside workers
voted against the decision.
Endorsement by a majority vote
of the decision of the Watersiders'
Federal Council could mean the
end of the Stevedoring Industry
Commission.
