WORK WANTED
MEETING HELD AT MANNUM
ACTIVITY URGED.
MAKNUM, AdhI 7.
Last night a meeting of all men out of
employment in the town, convened by
the local branch of the United Labor
Party, was held in the council hall.
There were about 40 present. Since the
completion of the contract at the dock:
for the barges to be used i nconnection
with the river locks a large number of
men have been thrown out of work.
The number registered locally o nthe Labor
Bureau is 50, and there are others
who have not yet registered. The meeting
appointed a committee t odraw up
a petition, to he signed by all local unemployed
and to present same io the
Commissioner of Public Works through
the members for the district, asking
that the river works, such as tlie reclaiming
of swamp lands and the locking
works, be hurried on -with. It is
felt locally that greater activity could
be shown Ln connection with the reclaiming
of the swamps adjacent to the
town. The swamp right opposite the
town has been in the hands of the Reclamation
Department for a considerable
time, but although promsies have been
made no definite effort lias been made
to further thi* work. There is no possibility
of other employment for the
men, and it is hoped that the authorities
will push on with the works.
Much of the success of the fixture was
dire to the splendid work of the painstaking
secretary of the Uniey Horticultural
Society (Mr. \V. Held, and the fine
result must be highly gratifyiug to him.
