AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
A smoke concert to inaugurate the
opening of the new club rooms of tihe
Newcastle Automobile, Association, In
Bolton-street, was attended by a repro
sentativo gathering of motorists anol
others last night. The assoclatioon' ws
formed two years ogo, and has a morn
borshilp of about 250.
Jrr. A. Goninan, president, in tllh
course of a brief speech, referred to
various matters that wore of concern to
members of the assoioatlon. Tile roads
lI thie Newcastle district had been im
proved considerably during tihe past few
years, but in Darts they weore still in it
shocking state. and this might be rome
died by the motorists beooming organised
and bIinging urgent road needs before
the local governing bodies. In a large city
like Newcastle they should be able to get
a big membership, and now that they ihad
flne clllb roolms, where they could as
semble and spend a pleasant hour, tile

increasingly availed of. The president
also referred to the various efforts on
behailf of patriotic functions, in which,
lie said, members of tihe association were
always pleased to assist as far as pos
sible by manking their cars available and
taking part generally. He commended
the work of tile house committe-

rooms, and cxtended ia cordial invitation
to members to take an active part in
tile affairs of tilhe organnlsation.
Mr. Donald Fraser. Inspector of
schools, also added a. few words, and,
with IMessrs. PF.lrrnnoll, F1, Tlley, C.
Mlurray-Giubbres i. Williams, and Dr.
Pe:sley, contributed items at the smoke
concert. ?Mr. Rlchardon nacted as accom
panist. The secretarial dutle?e wore car
rled out by Mr. It. J. Itiaynes, assisted
by the treasurer, Mr. A. Southwood.
In tle billiard match between Mr. HIar
ris and Mr. Grlltiths, 300 up. the former
was successful by 50.
