SWANSEA.
A few days ago a most remarkable event
of its kind took place here. Our much
respected residents, Mr. and Mrs. Godfied
. i Keeper, celebrated their golden wedding
with great festivity, Nearly one hundred
people set down to a luncheon given in
honour of the occasion which was laid out
to a large barn at their residence), and after
partaking of the good things provided
-'complimentary speeches were made by
several gentlemen, who expressed their
gratification at being present to do honour
to the guests of the celebration.
Mr. and Mrs. Keeper are natives of
Whittenburg, Germany, and came to Tasmania
in the year 1835, and settled down at
Swansea. Mr. Keeper is 77 years of age,
and Mrs. Keeper four years his junior.
To complete this very unusual event their
youngest daughter was married to Mr. A.
Kerwick by the Rev J. E. Roche, incumbent
of All Saints' Church. Such a celebration
had never occurred in this district before.
A ball in the Council-chamber (which was
kept up until the small hours of morning)
concluded one of the largest and most
enthusiastic gatherings known here for many
years.
