Sydney-Hobart race to
Geil III
HOBART, Sunday.
— Ceil III picked itself
up from a capsize
rounding Tasman
Island today before go
ing on to win the Syd
ney to Hobart yacht
race on corrected time.
Ceil HI is a new One
Ton Cup class yacht built
in Sydney by Doug
Brooker to a Bob Miller
design for Hong Kong
lawyer Bill Turnbull.
Ceil III won the race by
two hours, one minute on
corrected time from the
English 47ft Prospect of
Whitby (Arthur Slater).
Third was Rampage,
also a new design by Mil
ler, to the same hull shape
as Ceil III but carrying
more sail and a higher
handicap rating. It is
owned and skippered by
Peter Packer, of Perth.
The Sydney 43ft Taurus
(Geoff Lee), was fourth,
and the Melbourne 42ft
Vittoria (Lou Abrahams)
fifth.
Ceil III always looked
well placed on the correct
ed time calculations.
But rounding Tasman
Island, 40 miles from the
finish, the smooth ride
from Sydney in light to
moderate breeze camc to
a violent end.
A clout of wind from
the north, estimated by
Ceil III and the yachts
near it, at between 50 and
60 knots, suddenly hit.
The yacht, planing at 12
to 14 knots, hit four steep
waves in succession and
overpowered fay the fierce
wind and carrying a spin
naker, dug in, gybed and
was flung on its side.
Three of the crewmen
on Ceil III were grouped
around the mast preparing
lo drop tho spinnaker
after hoisting a headsail
for the reach-up Storm
Bay to the finish.
The men on deck hung
on as the rush of water,
as the boat dug in, threat
ened to hurl them over
board.
Ceil III quickly resum
ed racing without much
damage and without tak
ing any water below.
The British team looks
certain to win the South
ern Cross Cup, a four
race teams event, culmin
ating in the Hobart, after
a disappointing showing
by the New Zealanders.
While.the New Zealand
team held a 57 point lead
for the Hobart race, its
best placed yacht in 'the
Hobart was the 43 footer
Barnacle Bill, 13th.
