ENEMY HAR A
DESERT
Patrol Work
Growing
CAIRO, May 14.-British
troops have taken the initia
tive in the Western Desert
following the failure of the
German five-pronged thrust.
Our mechanised units are pressing
home their attacks in the Sollum area,
and are harassing enemy columns
round Tobruk.
It is considered in Cairo that the
German thrust was designed to dis
organise the grov.'ing British armored
patrol tactics. The blazing heat is still
increasing, and is likely to prevent
widespread operations.
A military communique issued in
Cairo tonight says that our two forces
converging on Ambah Alagi are mak
ing satisfactory progress despite road
obstructions and other physical diffi
culties.
In the lakes area, south of Addis
Ababa, we captured a strongly de
fended position, and took 500 pri
soners, two batteries of artillery,
five light tanks, and one anti-tank
gun.
Our troops also occupied Algi, an im
portant post north of Yavello. The pur
suit of the enemy is being continued
along the Neghelli-Dalle road.
In an action against an enemy rear
guard, which was driven back with
heavy losses, our troops on Monday
captured more than 100 prisoners. the
communique adds.-A.A.P.
