PARKING CAIRS
Ranking May Be Substituted
The special committee appointed by the
Adelaide City Council to enquire into
traffic control recommended today alte
rations in connection with the parking of
motor cars in the streets. Tile report
states:
The committee recommends that the
parking of motor cars-that is, placing
them at an angle to the kerb, in certain
streets-be prohibited, and all such vehi
cles be required to rank that is to lie
placed close to and parallel with the kerb
-a space of not less than four feet to
be left between each car. This should
apply to all streets, the present regula
tion, which requires vehicles to be ranked
in some and parked in other streets, being
misleading to drivers. The only excep
tion to this should be where stands have
been appointed by the council at which
mnotor cars may be allowed to remain for
longer than the stipulated term of 30
minutes, and should apply only to such
stands after 6.30 p.m., when little or no
ordinary traffic may be expected in'the vi
cinity of the stands. This alte?ationl will
simplify the bylaw in this particular re
spect. which in itself is desirable wherever
possible.
An additional argument for the substitu
tion of ranking as now proposed for park'
ing of vehicles is to enable the provision
of that section of the .existing bylaw
which prohibits the driver of one vehicle
pulling up abreast of another to be noy
easily enforced.
It is recommended that thie bylaw be
amended to prohibit any vehicle being
left standing within 10 feet of a pillar
hydrant.,
It is recommended that the bylaw be
amended by the addition of a
clause empowering the council to
prohibit the leaving of vehicles
on such portions of the streets
as may bl)e deemed advisable by the coun
cil. such areas to be indicated by appro
priate notices.
A letter from the Automobile Associa
tion asking the council to consider the
provision of day parks for motor vehicles
at the following points was con~sidered,
and the committe'e recommends the ap
pointment of 'the forlowing additional
sends:
On the western side of the. western
roaiway of Victoria square, ).otween
Grote and Franklin streets, stand to be
available both day and night.
At the north-western andt north-eastern
corners of Hindmarsh square, stands to
be available both day and night.
The following suggestions, which were
contained in a letter from the Automobile
Association, undtler notice, are not recom
mended:
The extension of the existing stand in
Victoria square opposite Moore's premises
round the southern boundary of the
square in front of the Supreme Court.
This. it is thought, would interfere with
traffic requirements.
'l'he provision of stands on the western
side of Victoria square, north of the War
Horse Memorial (a portion of which site
is already a licensed taxi stand) and be
twecn the main entrance to the Govern;
ment offices on the eastern side of Vic
toria .qquare. as the other side of thie road
way in question is occupied a.s a licensed'
stand for motor vehicles, while tram
lines are laid in the centre of thie road
way.
