King of Mirth Wins Birtday Cup by ength from Steel Bronze and Stralia
BERRIPA BEST OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS
Humorist Smartest in Tusmore Welter
MAIDEN PLATE TO ODDS-ON FAVORITE, FRIARSDALE
There was a ]arg,: attendance 'at Vic
toria. Park thirs afternoon when the Ade
laide Racing Club continuedl its Birth
day meeting. The weather was dull but
fine. The going was heavy.
All the acceptors faced the starter in
the Maiden Plate. Friarsdale was made
an odds-on favorite. The result was
never in doubt. The iml)orted horse left
tile barrier smnartly andl was first into tihe
straight and scored easily. \Vemnbley
did the best of the others, while Fool's
Play was third, with I aybank nearest
to the placcgctte'rs.
A. W\ilson, who has done most of
Scobie's riding during his visit to thihs
State, rode the winicr. 'Friarsdale is
a four-yeari-old chestnut horse by Fricr
Marcus and is a typlical British lhoime.
Great Finish
Humorist, Sibalys. and Flying Slave
fought out a great finish in the Tusanore
WVelter. I[umorist just succeeded, and
the judge placed the other pair a dead
heat for secotld.
Pistol (;rip \wais favorite, but although
the topwcighlt was in a handy position at
the tolp of the staight, hie was not able
to come on and missed a place. On the
concluding day of the Adelide Cup carni
val Humorist ran fourth in one of the
divisions r:f the Highlweight Handicap
It was that Irmn that gave backers a
lead today. The Flippant gelding looked
well. He has filled out. and should prove
useful propcrty to Mr. S. H. M. Halliday
over middle d:staunc events.
Sibalys. whi i..hi has disappointed in seve
ral recent rccs. showed his best form for
some time. Flying Slave finished well.
PI'istolano had every chance but was de
featedl over thle last bit. .Gay .Element
was another to show up prominently i:
the straight. Relluf made a dash a
couple of fillonmgs froi-h,,ome. hut could
not sustain hIlis effort. 3lanmbray Lord
was never tldangerois.
Brilliant Ctip Victory
There wa\s mu.h exc.itement as the 15
runners in the Birthdlav C(l) made their
way down the straight to do their pre
limninaties. Ali ol the hor-ses looked in
great crder, and as each came down the
str'aight there was keen interest. It was an

brilliant style from th, Prin!ce Traquair
gelding, with Stra!ia (the Adelaide Cup
winner) third.
King of Mirth ha; alw'ays ,con a popu
lar horse in this State. Hec has many
victories to his (.credit. ificluding the

won at Flmingtonl. '',lday's hero is a

Mr. Hole is an well-known member
of the committee ,f the South Austra

popular owners in this State.
He lives at ('!larec, has extensive prd
perty there. whereon his hcr-ses ;are

often ci)joyy the henefit of his paddocks.
King of Mirth is t raineil bq ' W. T.

this eve-nt two years ago. Un that
occasion his brother Jack ihad the
mount. The latter rode King of Mirth
in man;llly of his victories, but lately C.
Hoorrn, an able horsemanii, has been
astride AMr. liope's horse.
Barrier Positions
Positions at the barrier for the Birth
lday Cup were:
1-Peace Dove. .---The Tyrant
2--Ella Simon " 10-Valwyue
3-Strali;L 11-King's Pardon
4--Senisation. ' 12-Dependence
5--W\ycherley 13-Capancus
ti--The Storm 14--iWoollpack
7-King of Mirth 15-Our Saint
S--Steel Bronze
Boorn has ridden with success for
many years. He has travelled to Bro
ken Hill and other places in order to
follow his occupation, and his good
horsemanship has been rewarded.
Popular Success
Discussing today's race he said that he
always felt confident of success. He
was always in touch of the pacemaker,
and once in the straight he knew he had
the race in safekeeping.
Steel Bronze did surprisingly well, and
Stralia after getting clear of the ruck
chased the other pair with determina
tion. Old Dependence again put up a
good race to gain fourth place, and Val
w\yne finished fifth. The Tyrant had
-every opportunity. but failed to run the
race out. \Vycherlev also disappointed.
The Storm ran moderately, and so did
Our Saint. Peace Dove faded out at
the finish.
The scratchings were Bold and Bad
and Parvista. The time, 2.55, was two
and a half seconds slower than last year,
hut the heavy going would account for
that.
Mr. Hope was roundly congratulated
upou the success of his horse. He was
confident of success. and it was pleas
ing to see the victory of King of Mirth
so well received.
Favorite Wins Easily
Ber::pa, ' a. all the rage for the Gang
Forward Stakcs and the hot favorite
wo' easily. The Victo;:in two-year
old jinumped out smartly, anid once ;ie
straight was entered it could be seen
that he would win. Jones, however,
rode him out and he scored with ea;e
from Inverkeithnay and Rama Anton.
In the Adelaide Stakes Berripa chased
Petunia over the last couple of furlongs,
and on that form he looled a good thing
for today's contest. He is a brown colt
by October, the sire of Bitalli, and is
probable that the youngster will prove
to be a better stayer than a sprinter.
Inverkeithnay led early but he was no
match for Berripa in the run home.
Rama Anton showed his best form for
some time. and All Crimson ran fairly
well. Annihilate had every chance but
Karkany; was never dangerous. IT.
Jones. who was aboard Sweetmagne in
the City Handicap, rode the winner.
Among the Jumpers
uI the Jumpers' Flat Race Kurrumpore
was sent to the head of quotations, but
hlie favorite missed a place. Ridden
IatLiently by T. Spain, Mountain Lion was
always nicely placed, and over tlie last fur
long or so saiely held Kilronan, which de
ftated Comic Knight for second place.
Mountain Lion is a well-bred chestnut
;eldilng by Mountain King, and is in the
.omidable Whelan stable. Since his ar
rival in this State le ehas p, !iformed con
sistently, and it is not so many weeks
ago that he won a hurdle race on this
course. Kilronan lailed in the Steeple
chasers' Flat Race on the first d-- bIut
evidently the oiiting benefited him. He
showed much better form today. Comic
Knight w;,s always among the le'aders, and
it was only over the last few yards that
he was defeated for second money. Mount
Lock finished nearest to the placeetters.
