Pen Portraits of People
Young Union President
Ac~tivities of unionism and. Labor at
tracted the attention of MIr. John Chris
tian Beitz, of Cannon street, Port Ade
laide, at an early age. Although only 23
years old, he has been president of the
Federated Millers and 3Mill Employes'
Union for more than five years, and is
one of the youngest presidents in the
Commonwealth.
Mr. Beitz was born at Port Adelaide
and educated at IMarist Brothers' College
and St. Joseph's College, which were then
situated at Port Adelaide.
He entered the milling business in 1928,
when he was employed by the Ade
laide MIilling Company, Limited. Thirteen

months ago he transferred to tlie Yorke's
Peniusula Barley ,Producers' Association,
and is employed on the -harley grading
hulk, Garthlneill.
He showed great interest in affairs of
'the union, andl when 18 years of age
was asked to perform official duties. First
he served a term as vice-president in 1923,
when he obtained the position by a
majority of one vote. In 1924 he was
elected president unopposed, and since
then has served six terms in that capacity.
Each term is for a period of six months.
In his, duties he has been tutored and
assisted by the Hon. F. J. Condon (secre
tary) and MIr. J. Anderson.
Almost nightly MIr. Beitz is engaged in
some union or Lahpr work. He is now
selrving his second term as president of the
Port Adelaide Central Committee of the
Australian Labor Party. This year he is
vice-president of the Port Adelaide E!ec
torate Committee.
As a committeeman on the Port Ade
laidle Ambulance Committee he is now
serving his second year. -
MIr. Beitz is an ardent and conscien
tious worker for the organisation he repre
"ents. When not engaged in these matters
he is a keen crlicketer and a member of
Port Adelaide Catholic Club, of the
Port Adelaide and Suburban Church Asso
ciation.
