Supplies Exceed Demand
LOW PRICES QUOTED'
(SPECIAL TO "THE NEWS")
LONDOT, August 13.
It is understood that the South Austra
lian Government has purchased coal at
the current market price of approximately
13/6 a ton, free on board.
An analysis of' quotations for the past
two months .-given in trade papers shows
that the price of industrial coal ranged
from 11/9 to 14/.
"The Times" now quotes best Blyth
steam at 13/4, to 13/6; Bent Blyth small,
8/ to 9/; Tyne small, 9/3 to 9/6; Tyne
prime large, 12/9 to 13/; bunkers, 13/3 to
14/9.
Despite the loss of production due to
bank holidays -there is an excess of sup
plies, and therefore collieries are obliged
to work less time, some of the largest
dropping 17 days in a month.
The shortage of shipping and high
freights after heavy outward ballast; sai
ings have aggravated the export position,
but plenty of ballast freight will soon be
available for Australia, and therefore
prices could be cut.
Figures'indicate that exporters have not
attempted to dump coal in Australia, but
prospects in the industry are so gloomy
that representatives of leading collierids
have canvassed the Agents-General, and
they were most anxious to obtain orders.
The present low market prices make
special quotations unnecessary to under
cut the price of New South Wales coal.
