Strong Criticism of
Apple Shipments
LONDON, November 22.-Ausitralian
apple importers have issued a mermoran
dum deploring the present disastrous sea
son. They ascribe it primarily to the
irregular 'and excessive supplies, and re-1
commend that a scheduje of steamers
sliould be published in February each yer
giving the proper distribution at various~
British piorts, and thus avoiding glutted
periods such as in Ma1- this year, when
a million eases arrived in 10 days.
"Growers should study Britain's require
ments," says the me~morandiim, "and re
frain from sendinig cooking apples under
2% in. and de~saert apples -under 2%. in. in
diameter.
"Modern methods of pre-cooline the fruit
before shipment should also be introdur'ed
Bruising is worse this year than usual."
The memorandum adds thiat the* con
tinued unsatisfacto-v *state of the Aus
tralian. apple trade is eausing gra'-e
anxiety, and the position may arisen-here
merclants will not continue to finance
shipments.
