Commonwealth Club
Celebrates Silver Jubilee
"/E Commonwealth Club, which held
its first luncheon on April 15, 1910,
vith 110 members and the late Sir John
Gordon as president, will hold its sil
ver jubilee meeting tonight, with 932
membeis, and Mr. Reg Walker as
president-elect.
Mr. Walker will give a talk, illus
trated with lantern slides, at tonight's
meeting, and the election of members
of the executive, who were all nomin
ated unopposed, will be confirmed.
The vice-presidents will be Messrs. G.
E. Wilson and B. H. Gillman, and the
committee Messrs. E. L. Bean, A. E.
Clarkson, J. B. Hughes, R. L. Leane, G.
I. B. Sheridan, and A. D. Young.
The formation of the Adelaide Corm
monwealth Club followed a visit of Mr.
S. H. Skipper to Wellington, where he
saw the working of the New Zealand
club. The idea originated in Canada,
where there are clubs in many towns.
The decision to form a club here was
made at a meeting in the mayor's par
lor on February 15, 1910. The mayor,
Mr. (later Sir) Lewis Cohen, presided
over a meeting comprising Sir Robert
Thomas, and Messrs. C. H.- Goode, R.
Buring, C. L. Anthony, E. HW Limbert,
Wesley Lathlean, M. G. Shannon, R H.
Tapley, W. B. Wilkinson; and S. H.
Skipper.
