PORTLAND HORTICULTURAL
i " SOCIETY'S SHOW. " '
[y tOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT of
The fifth show under the auspices of the
Ports and Horticultural Society was held at
St Helen's, on Wednesday, 16th inst. The
season has been a remarkably fine one for
gardens, consequently the display of vegetables
was very good, and competition
generally keen. Tho whole of the vegetables
were very fine, and great surprise was expressed
at the size and quality of the
exhibits. The BLOW of flowers, except in
bouquets, epergnes, etc., was very poor,
there being only about ten entries in all.
Competition in epergnes, bouquets, buttonholes,
etc., was keen, and the exhibits were
all up to the mark. But little fruit was
shown, but here quality was to the fore, the
prize raspberries (Mr. B Wright), currants
(Mrs. Dawson), cherries (Mrs. Hinsby), and
gooseberries (Mr. Cherry were remarkably
fine. Dairy produce was about the most
important item in the schedule and
very good entries were received in all
classes. The exhibits of cheese, butter,
h Tins cut bacon, eggs, lard, etc., were of
very good quality. A very handsome plate
of fancy batter won Messrs. Irvine and
McEachern's special prize for Mr?. Hinsby.
The ladies were to the fore in bread, cakes,
preserves, etc.. and as well as in needle-
work, made a very good display. The
specimens of writing by school children in
Portland were fastened on the wall. The
prize in this department was won by Master
Jos. C. Irwin, of the Pyengana (George
River State School, with a beautiful speci-
men, in medal! for boys undertdghtthe prize
was won by Thomas Reid, of the St. Helen's
school. There were only four entries in the
dais for the best dairy cow, in which Mr.
F. Slatter carried off both first and second
honours. The jumping caused considerable
excitement, but the entries in thisdidnotcome
nearly up to those of former shows Messrs,
Davies and Pearce's grey horse won both
events. The show was a decided success.
The attendance in both afternoon and evening
was very good. A sharp shower rather
damped the ardour of the spectators of the
jumping, and made them run for shelter,
Mr R. Douglas Harris (Launceston) was
judge of dairy produce ; Mr. F. Walker
(Launceston) for fra t, flowers, and vegetables;
and Mrs. Healey, Miss Steel, and Miss
Johnston of bread, cakes, and fancy work,
and all gave every satisfaction. Mr. G. M.
Hickman was a most energetic secretary,
and was well seconded by Mr. Hodgman, his
assistant, as well as by Messrs. J. G. Brown,
T. Haley, G. Briggs, and Swifte. Mr. G.
A Turner acted as auctioneer, and about 9
p.m. started to sell the exhibits of vegetable,
etc. Competition was dull, consequently
prices did not run high.
