'Bells of hope' for Clinton
WASHINGTON: As tens of
thousands of people cheered
him on. President-elect Bill
Clinton led a national ringing of
the bells of hope on Sunday
to begin four days of inaugural
ceremonies.
He said it was "the beginning
of renewing our nation".
At 6pm on a cold, clear win
ter night, Mr Clinton, the Vice
President-elect, Al Gore, and
their wives and children tugged
a red rope that clanged a repli
ca of the Liberty Bell.
Simultaneously, in towns
across the country, others
joined in by tolling their own
bells.
The ceremony, across Wash
ington's Memorial Bridge from
the Lincoln Memorial,-was fol
lowed by fireworks.
