The ACT Government has bought
Macarthur House, Lyneham, for $6.5
million from the MLC Corporation as
part of its long-term accommodation
strategy.
The building, on the corner of Mac
arthur Avenue and Limestone Avenue,
will be occupied by ACT Public Works
and some sections of the Corporate
Services Group of the Department of
Urban Services.
The Minister for Urban Services,
Terry Connolly, said the price of $6.5
million was significantly below what
would be expected for a building on
such a prime site.
"The building is large [enough] to
collocate Public Works and some other
agencies of my department and. this
will enable the Government to vacate
leases of other buildings expiring over
the next 12 months," he said.
"Rent savings exceeding $2 million
will be achieved as leases expire and
the building is fully occupied."
It was another step in implementing
the Government's long-term office ac
commodation strategy, he said.
About 75 per cent of ACT Govern
ment accommodation is leased. When
Macarthur House and the former Wo
den TAFE building on Callum Street
are occupied, this would fall to 55 per
cent.
Macarthur House would be fully re
furbished within the next two to three
years.
