BOWLS
Hadley masters
Dawes to land
FDBA singles
with BARRY ROLLINGS
Rod Hadley, of Canberra
South, has won the Federal
District Bowling Association's
singles championship.
Last weekend at Canberra City,
where the surface was good but
bowlers found difficulty in coun
tering the gusty conditions, Hadley
proved too consistent for Quean
bey an's George Dawes and won
31-19.
Hadley is a previous title winner
and twice runner-up but his win
was most outstanding because
Dawes is a current NSW skipper
and one of the most consistent
bowlers in Australia.
Hadley, formerly of Canberra
West and Belconnen clubs, had to
produce some Pine bowls to beat
Queanbeyan RSL Memorial's Ken
Driscoll.
Dawes fought out his semi-final
against clubmate and fellow NSW
representative Ken Woods.
District fours championship
games also were played at the same
venue, with Ken Norris's Canberra
West team winning the morning
game against Jock Rooney's Can
berra South combination. Norris
scored four shots on the last end to
win 24-23.
In the afternoon Harry Turnbull,
of Belconnen, beat Norris 28-18
and Austin Mead, of Canberra
South, won comfortably over Wal
ly Bloomfield, of Canberra North.
□ At a special general meeting of
Canberra North last Sunday, at
tended by about 140 members, it;
was decjded to increase revenue by
imposing a'levy on members, in
creasing annual subscriptions 100
per cent and other measures.
The club has also investigated
cost-cutting procedures including
lowering green-maintenance ex
penses.
□ Bowlers from Sydney clubs
Bronte and Coogee joined Can
berra and district representatives
at Canberra South last Sunday to
honour Bert Symons on his presi
dent's day.
Bronte and Coogee clubs have
had a strong association with South
for many years.
The fours were won by Yass,
which defeated Canberra South in
the final.
