SCHWEITZER PRIZES
Haiti worker,
vagabond,
guitarist
WILMINGTON, North Carolina, Sunday,
(AAP-AP). — A doctor who works in Haiti, an
Indian teacher who describes himself as "a
vagabond in the name of God" and classical
Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia were named
yesterday winners of the Albert Schweitzer
prizes in medicine, humanities and music.
■ The awajds are made every five years in the three
categories in memory of Albert Schweitzer, the doc
tor, organist and humanitarian who established a
number of missions in Africa.
The humanitarian prize went to Sadhu Ittyavirah,
of India, who teaches and ministers to the. poor.
The prize in medicine went to Dr Larrimer Mellon,
who founded the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti.
Dr Gerald Shinn, who helped establish the North
Carolina Educational, Historical and Scientific Foun
dation which presents the awards, said Andres Segovia
was chosen "not only for his music but for his work
teaching young people the guitar in a memorable
way".
The awards, established five years ago on the
100th anniversary of Schweitzer's birth, will be pre
sented on April 23 at the University of North Caroli
na. Winners who are selected by an anonymous panel
of five international judges, get a medal and the
equivalent of $A4,250.
