GENEVA
SIR GRANVILLE RYRIE
DEBUT
WIRELESS NOVELTY
LONDON, Thursday.
A Geneva message states that Sir
Granville Ryrie made his debut at the
International' Labour Conference. In a ,
speech on industrial accidents, he said
tbntrBritish'»woundedi-d'uting- ?.thot-Wfir";
totalled 1,700 000,." while for the first five
years after the war industrial casualties
numbered 2,100,000. "
This appalling toll was only remedied
by scientific prevention. Probably much
was due to the failure of the human olp
ment, ( because nowadays almost as
much was spent on machine-guards as
perfecting the machine Itself. He declared
that the remedy was by education
rather than by legislation.
The conference began a discussion on
world-wide safety, the first campaign in
co-operation between employer and employees.
An interesting experiment was carried
out at to-day's meeting of a wireless
device, whereby it is hoped to avoid the
tedious process of translating all
speeches from French to English, and
vice versa, or since Germany's entry lie
to the League from German to French
and then to English. '
Under the arrangements today, interpreters
stationed closed to a loud speaker
equipped with a microphone, simultaneously
with the speech Interpreted in
mariners. Delegates were supplied
with a low type of ear 'phones and dial,
enabling them to turn on and hear the
only language inquired.
To-day's results were finite satisfactory.
Later there will be a trial in, four
languages.
