Retail stores face closure

Two of Eurobodalla's largest re
tail stores are up for sale. Grace
Bros stores in Batemans Bay and.
Moruya have been on the market
for some time.
To alleviate growing concern
and uncertainty in the business
community and among local resi
dents, Grace Bros corporate rela
tions manager, Mr Peter Coady,
said the local stores, whether sold
or not, would not be closed until
after Christmas, and probably not
until February.
If the stores are not sold shortly
as going concerns, Grace Bros
would of course have to consider
other options, such as closure or
redevelopment
Councillor Richard Roberts has
expressed concern for the future of
Eurobodalla Shire, claiming that
the Progressive Party, voting as a
block on all major issues, is reject
ing or deferring all independent
initiatives. Cr Roberts pointed out
that on nearly 60 motions already
passed by the new council, the
members of the Progressive Party
had broken ranks only twice.
Although Cr Roberts received
almost three times the vote of his
nearest rival, he was defeated as
president He is considering pro
posing a direct presidential elec
tion, as now is the case in
Shoalhaven.

An historic moment for Bate
mans Bay occurred last Tuesday
with the formation of the Bate
mans Bay High School P & C.
The new high school is expect
ed to be ready for 1988. Mr Stew
art Hooper, from Cooma, is to
be the principal of the school.
The Tilba Arts Festival Com
mittee has received funding
from the NSW Arts Council for
musical and street workshops at
the annual Easter Tilba Festival.
The Easter festival is attended
by many thousands of tourists
and local people and is the his
toric town's major annual event.
