WEAK COMPRESSION
WHEN CYLINDERS MISS
One of the commonest sources of missing
In an engine is loss of compres-
sion, but one which is seldom suspected.
In these days of efficient self
starters, the owner driver does not
lia viz to crank the engine very ire
(recently, so that lack of compression
on one cylinder may pass unnoticed,
for a considerable time. It may be
due to inadequate or excessive tapped
clearance, burnt valve seatings, stuck
up, worn or broken piston rings, or
even a leaky cylinder head gasket. On
the other hand, a cylinder may be
caused, to miss Through receiving a
mixture lacking in sufficient quota of
petrol, the IH-JM. UU.ÍH.IUU union of this
fault being an air leak in the induc-
tion system. Such a leak is particularly
liable to occur when an external
manifold is employed to distance
the mixture instead of' eastern passages
and it is worth not ng fruit external
manifolds are widely used on the in
I increasingly popular u- six-cylinder type of'
engine. It is essential! that the Hansen
attaching such manifolds to the Fyhn
l der block should be a close but all round
to prevent the ingress of air. Where
one branch of a manifold feeds the
inlet valves of two adjacent cylinders,
set in a common pocket, an air leak
at the Range will be liable to cause
both here cylinders to cut out inter,
mittently. "I
The first thing to (inspect Is tile |
slackness, of the nuts holding the
danger, or, if a jointing washer Is used,
a piece of it may become detached at the
narrowest part. The lightness of
the joint can be tested with a thin
feeler gauge, which showed l um You no
li, and should not, of course, be able
to attain an entry at any point. Air
leaks of a p LI ticularly baffling nature
can also occur past a 'worn piston,
though this fault will also show itself
by lack of compression, and last, but
not least, past the worn guide of a
faulty Inlet valve.
The natives of the South Sea Islands
use the wood of a tree to catch fish.
It needs only to be put in the water,
And in a short time the fish comes to
the surface in a stupefied condition,
and can easily be caught by hand.
- Among the Siamese, the curious custom
obtains of reversing the elbow
joint of the left arm as a sign of' Mr'
priority. The children of both sexes
are trained to reverse the elbow In this
graceless and painful position at an
early age if their parents are persons
of high grade.
