City Band teenagers' long march
Australian-born artist Lorraine Jenyns has her 'Family Portrait' in glazed earthenware included in the Australian National Gallery's new and special exhibition for the very young. is a day out from the city to the country and will take children about 20 minutes from beginning
to end, introducing them to about 40 works — paintings, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery.
THE TEENAGERS from the Canberra City
Band will march, playing all the way, from Civic
to Woden tomorrow night.
The 12-kilometre march is aimed at raising
funds to get the band members to Adelaide next
Easter where they will be set to win the National
Concert Band Championship title for the third year
in succession.
This time last year the band staged a similar
sponsored marchathon to raise funds for a concert
tour of Japan, which it made in July this year.
The marchathon begins in Civic at 6pm and
finishes at Woden Shopping Square at about 8pm.

Russian bazaar
THE RUSSIAN Orthodox Church's annual
Christmas bazaar will be held on Saturday from
9am to 1.30pm in the Parish Hall of St John's
Anglican Church, Reid.
Russian tea from a samovar will be served with
Russian culinary specialities. In addition there will
be well-stocked stalls.
Aboriginal art
A SELECTION of recent work from remote
Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land is in
cluded in 'Contemporary Aboriginal Art — A
Survey' at the Canberra School of Art.
The exhibition is presented by the school in
conjunction with Inada Holdings Pty Ltd which has
a national network of galleries and is funded by the
Aboriginal Development Commission to promote
and market Aboriginal and Islander arts and crafts.
In addition there arc arts and crafts from
Katherine and paintings from the Western Desert
as well as bird carvings from Bathurst Island. City-
based artists include Banduk Marika with stylised
lino cuts, prints by Jimmy Pike from Western
Australia and oil paintings by Jeff Samuels and Jim
Simon.
The exhibition at the School of Art Gallery
closes on December 22 and is open to the public
Wednesday to Friday, 1 lam to 5pm, Saturday noon
to 5pm and Sunday 2 to 5pm.
Photographs
TWO SYDNEY photographic artists, Patricia
Hoyle and Carmel Deakin, will show 45 black and
white photographs in the exhibition 'Scapes' at the
Canberra Theatre Centre Gallery from today until
Sunday.
Patricia Hoyle's photographs were taken in
Europe this year, showing various aspects of life in
Yugoslavia, Vienna and Germany; her work
analyses human habitation.
In contrast Carmel Deakin's work depicts the
Australian bush.
Hours are 10am to 9pm today, tomorrow and
Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
Harp recital
THE VENUE for a harp recital by Welsh harpist
Elinor Bennett has been changed to Lecture Theatre
4, Canberra School of Music, Marcus Clarke Street.
Doors open at 7.45pm and admission at the
door is $6, concession $4.
Senior citizens
CHILDREN of Turner School will entertain
members of the Canberra Senior Citizens' Club at
10 Watson Street, Turner, at today's meeting.
Tomorrow the club will close for the Christmas
recess, reopening on Tuesday, January 14. All
members arc invited to share in the break-up
activities tomorrow.
BELCONNEN Senior Citizens Club members
are reminded that bookings for the Christmas party
on December 19 are now closed. Today there will
be a speaker on 'Making Wine'. Afternoon tea will
be served.
On Tuesday the 1st Kingsford-Smith Guides
will give a concert for club members in the hall at
1.30pm and will serve afternoon tea. The club will
be closed from December 20 to January 6.
Dickson
THE DICKSON Neighbourhood Centre's dis
cussion group meets tomorrow from 10am to
prepare for the official break-up Christmas party on
December 20 at noon, with lunch and musical
entertainment. Further information and invitations

Activities of the Dickson Neighbourhood Cen
tre will stop after this for the holiday period and
begin again on February 6 with yoga and on
February 7 with the discussion group and games
afternoon.
Studio Altenburg
THE 10th annual Christmas exhibition at Stu-
dio Altenburg, Braidwood, will open tomorrow
night with sculpture by Mark Grey-Smith, Michael
Legrand and Laurence Rimes, pottery by Richard
Murray and woodwork by Brian Eves. Gallery
hours are 10am to 5pm every day.
Choral
AN EVENING with Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart and Antonio Salieri will be presented by
the Canberra Choral Society in the Llewellyn Hall
at the school at 8.15pm on Saturday.
The guest conductor will be Hans Mommer and
the soloists are Margaret Sim, Ann Fish, Michael
Tatchell and San-Ky Kim. Tickets are $12 adults,
family $25 and concession $8.
Bush dance
CANBERRA Stereo Public Radio and Canberra
band Free Selection will hold the last bush dance
of the year on Saturday at the Yarralumla
Woolshed. Dancing begins at 8pm and continues
until midnight. Admission is $5, concessions $4. A
caller will explain all the dances. A bar service is
available.
BPW Club
MEMBERS of the Business and Professional
Women's Club of Canberra will attend the Can
berra Choral Society's concert at the School of
Music on Saturday.

Pathfinder
A PATHFINDER investiture service will be
held at the Turner Seventh-day Advcntist Church
on Saturday at 1 lam. Pastor Bill Townend, youth
director of South NSW, will conduct the service
and award members of the National Pathfinder
Club for successfully completed assignments in
1985.

Singles
CANBERRA Christian Singles Fellowship
members will see 'Burke and Wills' at the Civic
Centre Cinema at 5.15pm on Saturday and have
supper later.
Music society
THE NEW Music Society, with assistance from
the Arts Development Board, will present a free
jazz concert at the Arts Council Gallery, Gorman
House, at 2pm on Sunday. The players arc Colin
Hoorweg on drums, Daryl Pratt on vibes and Tony
Hayes on bass.
Esperanto
THE CANBERRA Esperanto Community will
commemorate the birth of Dr L. L. Zamenhof,
composer of the international language, on Monday
at 7.30pm in the Migrant Resource Centre, Grifiin
Centre.
The program includes a talk on Lydia
Zamenhof, the history of the Canberra club, news,
games, music, a one-act play and supper. All
Esperantists and friends are invited. Inquiries are

Euthanasia
THE VOLUNTARY Euthanasia Society and
Civil Liberties Council have organised a meeting
at which Professor Jim Richardson, president of the
South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society,
will discuss patients' rights.

Carol singing
THE ARTS Council Singing Group from Dea
kin will sing Christmas carols at Noah's Lakeside
International Hotel at 7.30pm on Tuesday. The
occasion is the presentation of toys from the hotel's
staff to the Salvation Army for distribution in the
Canberra area. The public is welcome.
Some of the Reid group of Arts Council singers
will sing at Ozanam Home for the Aged in
Campbell today and on Friday, December 20, both
groups will sing carols at the Manuka Lawns.
Candelight
ON WEDNESDAY the 41st annual Carols by
Candlelight will begin at 7.30pm on the lawns in
front of Parliament House.
The carols will be presented by the Canberra
YMCA, the Lions Club of Canberra-Woden and the
Woden Valley Youth Choir and is sponsored by
Solid Gold 2CA.
John Bok of Capital 7 will compere. Canberra
baritone Colin Slater will be the guest artist and the
music will be provided by the Woden Valley Youth
Choir and the Canberra City Band.
Carol books and candles will be available free
of charge and there will be recorded carols for
picnickers from 6 to 7.30pm.
