IN BRIEF
Schoolboy league
begins tomorrow
Hawker College, Copland College, Karabar
High School, and Warrawong High School will
play in the Commonwealth Bank Cup rugby
league competition first round at Seificrt Oval,
Queanbeyan, tomorrow with the first game begin
ning at 2pm.
Hawker will play Karabar High and Copland
will meet Warrawong High, from Wollongong.
In last year's competition, the Canberra col
leges fought out the regional final with Copland
reaching the semi-finals, only to be beaten by
Fairfield Patrician Brothers.
The Commonwealth Bank will provide spon
sorship totalling $132,000 for schoolboy rugby
league which has attacted more than 1,000 teams
and up to 20,000 players this year.
Warriors in final
Warriors won their way into next week's ACT
men's softball grand final with a 14-11 win over
Boomerangs in the preliminary final at Mawson
yesterday.
The game was tied 9-9 at the end of the normal
seven innings and had to be played out in an
eighth innings tiebreaker.
In Division II, Woden Valley beat Warriors
11-7.
Diving titles
The ACT primary and secondary schools'
springboard diving championships will be held at
the Civic Olympic Pool on March 27.
The championships will start at 9.30am and be
decided in four divisions - open primary, sub
junior (12-13 years), junior (14-1 5), and senior (16
and over) - with sections for girls and boys in
each division.
Although entries officially closed on March 14,
organisers will acccpt nominations until Friday.
Nomination forms are available in all ACT
schools and should be sent or dropped into Jenny
Nixon, Canberra High School, Bindubi Street,
Macquarie (telephone 511000 during work).
Water polo training
The ACT schoolboys' and schoolgirls' water
polo teams will have their final training session
at the Civic Olympic pool tomorrow for the
Australian schools championships which begin in
Canberra on Sunday.
The schoolboys will play NSW I at 11am in
the opening gpme at the Australian Institute of
Sport swimming hall.
All schoolgirl games will be played at the Civic
Olympic Pool.
The championships will end on March 27.
Junior cycling win
Michael Aisbitt, of the Canberra Cycling Club,
and Graeme Shepherd, of Bankstown, formerly
from the ACT, rode in the NSW State junior team
which won the Ansett interstate cycling cup at
Brisbane's Chandler Stadium last weekend.
Shepherd was a member of the team which won
the Italian and teams' pursuit events, with Aisbitt
finishing sccond in the sprint event.
Marathon warm-up
A 10 and 20-mile road race has been planned
for next Sunday by the Weston Creek Athletics
Club as a lead-up to the Nike Canberra marathon
to be held on April !3.
The race will begin at Black Mountain Penin
sula at 7am with entries accepted from 6am. For
further details, telephone 546548 after hours.
Hawker favoured
Hawker College, with several players ex
perienced at senior level, should have the edge
over St Clares III in the final of the ACT
schoolgirls' cricket competition today.
The match will played on the Hughes synthetic
pitch beginning at 2pm.
Hockey for Sydney
SYDNEY: Australia has bccomc the host to an
international women's hockey tournament ori
ginally scheduled for New Zealand.
Canada, the US, New Zealand, and Korea will
join Australia and the Australian under 21 team
at Sydney's Homebush stadium from April 18 to
24.
Jews on rugby tour
JOHANNESBURG, Monday (Reuter). - A
22-member rugby team with Jewish players from
around the world is due in South Africa tomorrow
for a month-long tour.
South African rugby chief Danie Craven said
that players from Australia, Canada and Israel
were in the team.
While he said the team would play against
provincial and sub-union teams, he would not
give further details about the tour.
Scot to lead Lions
LONDON, Monday (Reuter). - Colin Deans,
who led Scotland to a share of the Five Nations
rugby union championship, was named today as
captain of the British Lions team to play the Rest
of the World in the first of two games to celebrate
the International Board's centenary at Cardiff on
April 16.
Sixteen for sevens
BUENOS AIRES, Monday (AFP). - An Ar
gentine squad leaves Buenos Aires on Tuesday for
Australia to compete in the 16-nation rugby union
sevens tournament in Sydney.
The tournament features Australia, Argentina,
Canada, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy,
Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Rumania,
Scotland, Tonga, the US, and Wales.
