Dismiss council, says
Opposition leader
SYDNEY: A Sydney council should
be dismissed because of connections be-
tween some of its aldermen and criminals,
the Leader of the NSW Opposition, Mr
Dowd, said in the NSW Parliament yes-
terday.
Mr Dowd said that an elected alderman of
Marrickville Council was a convicted crimi-
nal, and the council had been associated with
the Nugan Hand Bank.
He likened the activities of some inner-city
councils to those of the Victorian Branch of
the Ship Painters and Dockers' Union.
The Minister for Local Government, Mr
Gordon, rejected Mr Dowd's call, saying Mar-
rickville Council had been investigated by
local-government inspectors, who had found
no grounds for its dismissal.
Mr Dowd referred to an alleged assault on
a Marrickville alderman, Mr Ken Brennan.
A Mr Tom Domican, whom Mr Dowd
described as "an enforcer", had denied the
assault.
Mr Domican was quoted as saying: "I don't
blame people for thinking I'd done it because
I was in the room with him and they saw me
walking out. But the whole thing was an act.
He fell down screaming, pretending I had hit
him."
Mr Dowd said one alderman, whom he did
not name, had alleged that other people
involved in the council had "offered him
money to kill people for personal and political
reasons".
He said that Mr Dennis Pittard, a former
rugby-league player was "a Nugan Hand
operative".
