CHESS
Three share junior title

For the first time in its 25-year
history, the Australian junior chess
championship has resulted in a three
way tie for first. This was confirmed
officially in Canberra yesterday when
Ias»-round adjournment results failed to
influence the final placings in the event,
which was played at the Italo-Australian
club in Forrest.
The joint winners are Paul Brockhuysc,
a 17-ycar-old student from Sydney, who was
the defending title-holder, Matthew Drum
mond, 17, from Victoria, and 16-year-old
South Australian junior champion, Konrad
Hornung.
These three will enter into a play-off at
Easter, in Melbourne, to decide who will
hold the title for 1983, and possibly the right
to represent Australia in the world junior in
Europe, later in the year.
Other prizewinners were: Michael
Hopwell (NZ), 4th (on countback); Hoselito
Stankovic (SA), 5th; Ian Pitt (NSW), 6th
(on countback); Simon Lee (SA), best Un
dcr-16 years; Colin Davis (NSW), best un
der-14 years; Mark Robertson (Qld), Aus
tralian junior lightning champion. All
players received a chess medallion.
