Hunt to quit grand-prix racing
JOHANNESBURG, Thursday
(AAP-Reuter). — Former world
Champion James Hunt, of Britain,
said yesterday that he was quitting
the grand-prix motor-racing circuit
at the end of the year because the
cars had become more important
than the drivers.
Speaking at the Kyalami circuit at
unofficial practice for Saturday's South
African grand prix, he said emphasis on
car design meant victory simply went to
the driver sitting in the best car.
"What is called the drivers' Cham
pionship is a car de
signers' championship now", he said.
"Drivers are becoming completely ir
relevant".
During afternoon practice, Hunt's
best time was one minute 16.8 seconds
round the 4.1 kilometre circuit.
Canadian Gilles Villeneuve, lapping
in his Ferrari at an average speed of
202 km/h clocked the day's fastest time
of 1:12.9.
