Panthers remain undefeated
SOFTBALL
Panthers defeated Tornadoes
16-12 in round eight of the ACT
Softball Association's competition
at Mawson Sportsground on Satur
day to retain their unbeaten record.
Robin Duff, normally number one
pitcher for Panthers, left the pitching
to Libby Boag and Tracey Wood.
Panthers outscorcd Tornadoes 6-1 in
the first innings and 3-2 in the second,
while Tornadoes turned the tables 5-4
in the third; Panthers scored a run in
each of the next three innings while
Tornadoes remained scorelcss until the
seventh, when they hit four runs to nil.
Tracey Wood was the best batter for
Panthers with five safe hits. She also
pitched the only strikeout for the
match. Tornadoes had six, safe hits to
16 by Panthers.
Warriors and Grammar Braves had
a close match before Warriors sealed
the result 7-6 at the top of the seventh
innings, when Grammar Braves failed
to score.
Neither team scorcd in the first and
it was not until the bottom of the second
before Warriors batted in four runs.
Grammar Braves reduced the lead to
1-4 after the third but it was not until
the fifth innings that Braves, were able
to register their first safe hit through
Tcrri Fcnton, followed by Barbara
Christoffelesz, and a home run by Sus
an Howard.
Looking good
Warriors led 6-3 at the top of the
sixth.when Fiona Body scorcd a homer
for Warriors, followed by a two-base
hit by Judy Matthews.
Braves were looking good- when
Tracey Fentori had a ihrcc-base hit and
Braves equalled Warriors' effort of two
runs for the innings.
The game ended in the seventh when
Braves were unable to add to their
score.
The much-improved Beagles made
Qucanbeyan work hard for its 4-2 win.
The match . was scoreless until the
fourth innings when Qucanbeyan
scored a run and added another in the
fifth before being outbattcd by Beagles,
who scored twice.
Qucanbcyan took the lead again in
the sixth with two more runs without
reply! Wendy O'ConncI! pitched three
strikeouts for-Qucanbcyan and Toni
Schivanato threw one for Beagles.
$
