Seamen 'take' tanker
LE HAVRE, France,
Wednesday (AAP
Reuter). — More than
30 British seamen,
screaming and
brandishing sticks and
iron bars, stormed the
34,618 tonne
British -registered
tanker Globtik Venus
today to end a two-week
occupation by its
Filipino crew.
The men, who were
flown from England on
Monday night, launched
their brief assault just
after midnight.
The Filipinos stood
motionless as the Britons
wearing protective helmets
rushed up the gangway,
shrieking and waving their
sticks.
One Filipino shouted,
"We don't want trouble",
Another raised his arms in
submission.
The 28 Filipinos on
board had refused to leave
the vessel, loaded with
50,000 tonnes of crudc oil,
until the owners raised
wages in line with
International Transport
Federation levels.'
Their negotiations wilh
the o\vners, Globtik
Tankers, whose chairman
is Indian-born British
millionaire ship owner Mr
Ravi Tikkoo, had been
conducted by the French
communist-ied CGT union
grouping.
