Scientists
to test
meningitis
survivor
ADELAIDE, Tues-
day. — Two South
Australian medical re-
search scientists left
Adelaide tonight for
Rockhampton to con-
duct tests on a 14-year-
old Aboriginal boy who
has survived a rare and
hitherto fatal form of
meningitis.
The boy is the first to
have survived the disease,
diagnosed as amoebic
meningitis, which has not
previously been diagnosed
in Australia outside of
SA.
It is known to be caused
by a waterborne organism
but it is not known under
what circumstances it
occurs or how it can be
prevented.
The disease was
diagnosed in Rockhampton
after the boy became ill at
Mt Morgan, where he had
been swimming in the
town pool.
The senior medical
bacteriologist at the SA
Institute of Medical and
Veterinary Science, Dr
Kevin Anderson, and a re-
search zoologist, Miss
Adele Jamieson, confirmed
the condition alter examin-
ing a spinal-fluid sample
sent to Adelaide from
Rockhampton on Sunday.
They left for Rockhamp-
ton today.
