One in 12 babies
born in Australia dur-
ing 1970 was illegiti-
mate, according to fig-
ures issued yesterday
by the Commonwealth
Statistics Bureau in
Canberra.
Ex-nuptial births num-
bered 21,367, or 8.30 per
cent of the total number
of births, 1,782 more than
in 1969. There were 158
mothers under the age of
15.
The number of live
births in Australia in
1970 was 257.516, the
largest number ever regis-
tered in one year, and
7,340 more than in 1969.
The crude birth rate.
20.48 births for every
1,000 of population, also
was higher.
Figures for
ACT
The figures show 1,794
boys and 1,681 girls born
in the ACT in 1970, com-
pared with 1,609 and 1,470
for 1969.
Of the total number of
births, 134, or 3.86 per
cent, were ex-nuptial, 43
more than in 1969.
There were 3,397 single
births. 75 twins and three
triplets born alive.
