Right-hand driving
switch rejected
HOBART, Thursday, i
— A change-over to
driving on the right-hand
side of the road in I
Australia was rejected by
the Australian Transport
Advisory Council in
Hobart today.
Commonwealth and State
ministers, who make up the
ATAC, decided that to
change would probably cost
several hundred million
dollars and would not
bring any real benefits.
A right-hand side rule
would jeopardise car ex
ports to Asian nations, most
of which use the left-hand
drive rule.
The Australian Road Re
search Council will be
asked to hasten its study of
the suitability of the give
way to the right rule for
Australian conditions.
Commonwealth and State
attorneys-general will be
asked to modify third-party
insurance legislation. It was
felt that the movement of
vehicles from one State to
another should not invalid
ate third party insurance.
It was agreed that legis
lation should allow vehicles
to operate temporarily on
interstate registration. But
motorists moving perma
nently to another State
should take out new regis
tration and new driving
|licences within 14 days.
