Capricornia and ACT
campaigns
Sir, - As a long-time sup
porter of the Country Party, it
is refreshing indeed to read the
direct and clean comments made
by Mr John McEwen in cam
paigning for the CP in Capri
cornia. The unnecessary and em
barrassing intrusion by the
Deputy Leader of the Liberal
Party is now placed in proper
perspective after being rightly
resented throughout Australia.
It is fitting indeed to note, too,
that the Zodiac sigh for Capri
cornia is a goat - and this one
may prove to be the greatest
billy of them all.
While the Country Party re
frains from entering local gov
ernment elections - including
that for the ACT Advisory
Council - it seems appropriate
to take this opportunity of cor
recting repeated mis-statements
by the ACT Liberal Party that
"this is the first time the Liberals
have contested the Advisory
Council elections".
Some of us have wondered
why the newcomers in the Lib
erals here have gratuitously over
looked (and thereby shown gross
ingratitude to) the True Liberals
of the past such as Mrs Mary
Stevenson and Mr A. C. Morris,
who served us so well as elected
Liberals to the council in pre
vious years. It might also be re
corded that many of us con
tested this election under the
Liberal aegis and, even if de
feated, managed to put forward
a point of view which has, I
hope, not been neglected in re
ccnt years.
Surely there arc still some old
time True Liberals who will not
allow such ingratitude to be per
petuated in statements by the
current Liberal Party people in
the ACT.
I have already paid tributes
to Mrs Stevenson and to Mr
Morris and well recall the
warmth of the companionship of
Mr John Murray and others in
previous elections and would
hope that their services may not
be overlooked in so short a time.
R. P. GREENISH
Campbell.
