DAME PATTIE 2-UP
SYDNEY, Sunday. — The 12-metre yacht Dame Pattie led all the
way in the second America's Cup trial off Sydney Heads today to beat
Gretel by 8 minutes 54 seconds.
The Melbourne-owned Dame Pattie
— skippered by Jock Sturrock—
proved the superior boat in the light
eight-knot breeze, being able to point
higher into the wind.
Sturrock yesterday beat Archie
Robertson in Gretel by 1 minute 56
seconds after Gretel made a bad start.
Warm-up trials will be held on the
three remaining weekends of this
month, with selection trials for the
America's Cup beginning on February
25 for seven consecutive days.
Dame Pattie led Gretel today by
2 minutes 22 seconds at the first mark,
2 minutes 2 seconds at the second, and
1 minute 54 seconds at the third.
On the second time around the
triangular course Dame Pattie was 4
minutes 51 seconds ahead of Gretel
on the fourth mark, 5 minutes 49 sec-
onds on the fifth, and 8 minutes 40
seconds at the finish.
Dame Pattie sailed sweetly and her
crew worked well. She out-
classed Gretel.
Robertson, whose crew worked just
as smoothly as Sturrock's could not get
close to Dame Pattie.
Spectator craft hovered around
the white-hulled Gretel and the blue
hulled Dame Pattie during the race,
which lasted three hours 58 minutes
and 18 scconds.
