THE GENERAL ELECTION.
The Standard reports that negotia
tions.are proceeding for the arrangement
of a modtis vivendi between the Liberals and
Socialists (Labour Party) at the general
eldction.
The Standaird adds that the miners ,of
Northumberland are heartily supporting
Mr. T. Burt, P.C., M.P. (Liberal-Labour)
and Mr. Charles Fenwick, M.P. (Liberhl
Labour), who refused to sign the Labour
pledge.
The Parliamentary Committee of the
Trade Union Congress urges the Govern
ment in the event of a dissolution to give
the country the long .desired opportunity of
recording its judgment on the desirability
of abolishing the hereditary legislative
Chamber.
AMr. A. J. Balfour, in a letter to a cor
respondent, says that a tax on raw cotton
was never contemplated by him. Such a
tax would evidently violate the funda
mental principles of fiscal reform.
