THE ANTARCTIC.
SHACKLETON'S EXPEDITION.
LONDON, December 30.
Professor David, the eminent Australian
scientist, has arrived is scientific
adviser to Sir Ernest Shackleton's
expedition to the Antarctic.
Professor David states that Shackleton's
proposed journey will probably be
the most perilous and difficult in the
world. The dog sledges, with aeroplane
attachment, is the best possible transport.
In order to make the journey
valuable Shackleton will probably divert
his route slightly to the right near
the South Polar plateau, in order to
locate the Antarctic Andes.
APPLICATIONS POURING IN.
LONDON, December 30.
Applications to join the Shackleton
expedition are pouring in.
Captain Davis is to command the
Aurora.
Sir Ernest Shackleton has received
£50,000, but requires £70,000 for the
full efficiency of his expedition.
Professor David states that Dr.
Mawson's aeroplane sledge was only a
partial success, but with modifications
may prove a valuable adjunct to the
dog teams. A
STACKHOUSE'S PROGRAMME.
The programme outlined by Mr. J.
Foster Stackhouse for his expedition to
the Antarctic is as follows-The will
sail on August 1 for the Falkland Islands,
and hopes on December 1 to es-
tablish a base on Deception Island, in
the South Shetlands. He will sail on
December 12 along the Weddell Isla,
where it is believed, there is a waterway
north of Graham Land, to Shock loton's
new westerly point at the top of Weddell
Isla. He returns by the Mine
route to Deception Island for coal, and
from there sails to Charcot Land, which
is 78deg. west. -He hopes to find a
waterway from the south of Charcot
Land to the Ross Sea. He proposes to
winter between Charcot Land and the
Ross Sea, fixing his quarters about December,
1916, and making for McMurdo
Sound with 35 dogs.
Forty-two officers and men, including
a geologist, biologist, and other scientists,
will accompany the expedition.
An aeroplanes for scouting will be taken,
but there will be no wireless installa-
tion. The
cost of the expedition will be
£35.000, towards which subscriptions
