THE BATTLE OP THE SOMME.
none Help
The capture of Contalmaison now makes the Allies' new line complete from Ovillers to Barleux (south of Peronne).
It runs through Ovillers, Contalmaison, Montauban (or, rather, Tronos Wood, a mile and a quarter to the east), and
Hardecourt, to the Somme, Biaches, and Barleux. The original line is shown in black. The British advance ranges from
1,000 .yards to 21 mile, and the farthest point gained by the French is about six miles. The Germans hold part of Estrées
and also Villers, a village, a short distance due south of Barleux. The German expect the French to cross the
river abovo Péronne, and endeavour to get in behind the Germans attacking Hardecourt and Montauban.
