MEETINGS.

AMALGAMATED SOCIETY OF CARPENTERS
AND JOINERS.
A well-attended meeting of the Hobart
branch of the above was held on
Tuesday night, Mr. V. Barker (president)
in the chair. Reports from
the several delegates on the Trades and
Labour Council, Denison Divisional
Council, Building Trades Federation,
etc., were received, and passed. Several
members reported having to leave their
work owing to the strike of carters and
drivers. A general discussion followed,
in which full sympathy with the
Carters' and Drivers' Union in fighting
for a living wage was passed. j
ANNA., HOBART BRANCH, No. 1.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the
A.N.A., Hobart branch, was held on
Tuesday evening, at the National Mutual
Buildings, the president (Mr. F.
T. Andrews) occupying the chair. Mr.
A. R. Crowhurst was elected an honorary
member of the association, and ten
nominations were received for benefit
membership. The. secretary of the
United Friendly Societies' Dispensary
(Mr. Latham) was present, and gave a
very lucid explanation of the way in
which that institution is conducted, the
cost of its upkeep, etc. Mr. G. T.
Holtham was elected a member of the
committee. A saloon rifle competition
was held during the evening for a
prize resented by the branch. Mr.
F. M. Lovett was declared the winner,
and was presented with a handsome
pair of pipes by the president.
ST. JOHN'S FRIENDLY SOCIETY.
LAUNCESTON, August 2.
The 30th annual meeting of members
of St. John's Friendly Society was held
to-night, Mr. R. H. Cartledge'(presi-
dent) in the chair. The report was as
follows:-"The deaths during the year
have been one male and one female
member and two children, with claims
amounting to £42, against £116 the
previous year. Seventeen made members
have joined, and our present membership
is 238 financial and four in arrears.
The funds, last audit, were
£1,300 14s., and now they are £1,409
10s 1d., safely invented by the trustees
at good interest, an increase of £109
5s. The medical officers of the society
are still giving satisfaction ; also the
staff of the U.F.S. dispensary."
Y.M.C.A. BOYS' DEPARTMENT.
Electricity, with experiments," was'
the subject of Mr. F. W. Medhurst's address
at the boys' department of the
Y.M.C.A. last evening, and was the
means of attracting a large " muster.
The speaker's qualification for lecturing
014 this subject is well
known, and on this occasion he
communicated, in a manner easily understood
a wealth of information, which,
with the experiments, proved most instructive.
, Prolonged applause showed
unmistakably that Mr. Medhurst's efforts
were appreciated. Mr. F. L. Langford
presided, supported by Senior Scout-
master Hook and Mr. R. H. Simmons,
the latter gentleman, being an old association
member, who is at present spend-
ing a short holiday in Hobart. Prior to
the meeting the chairman entertained
the committee of the elder boys' branch
at tea.
HOBART HOMOEOPATHIC
HOSPITAL.
At the usual weekly meeting of the
house committee, held yesterday afternoon,
the secretary reported that he had
just received notification from the hon.
secretary that the Hobart Homoeopathic
Hospital had been registered under the
A.T.N.A. as a hospital, also as a training
institution for nurses.
The Council of Churches will meet at
the 'Mechanics'-hall to-night.
