HORSE STEALING.- Thomas Edlington was
charged with having, on the 7th of July last, stolen
a black horse, the property of Andrew McCann.
The case had in the first instance been instituted as
one of disputed possession, and adjourned; but
immediately after the adjournment prosecutor took out
a warrant against the prisoner for horse-stealing,
and the first hearing of the charge took place at the
last Braidwood police court, when, after a considerable
deal of evidence, it was adjourned till Thursday.
After hearing the evidence and remarks from both
attorneys, which occupied a considerable time, the
bench dismissed the case, and intimated that viewing
it as a question of disputed property only, they were
of opinion that the prosecutor had gone farther than
he was justified in having obtained a warrant against
the prisoner.--- Abridged from Braidwood Dispatch.
Little River.--- Some new and payable ground
has been discovered, we learn, at Settlers Flat,
Fagan's Creek, and about forty men have taken up
claims upon it. The staking, we hear, is from six to
ten feet. The new ground is on the upper portion
of the flat. Some very good ground was worked on
the lower portion of it some two years since. There
is some talk of new ground having been discovered
also on the Warramburra Creek, on the upper side
of the Clyde Road.--- Braidwood Dispatch.
