TWO WORLD SWIM
RECORDS BROKEN
NTEW YORK (A.A.P.).-
Two new world swim
ming records were set in
New York in trials held
under the auspices of the
National Amateur Athletic
Union.
Dick Cleveland set a re
cord on Thursday of 54.8
seconds in, the 100-metre
freestyle.
The previous record of
55.4 seconds was set by Alan
Ford, former Yale swimmer,
on June 29, 1948.
Yoshi 3yaka, of Hawaii,
and an Olympic champion,
swam the 100-metre back
stroke in 1min. 2.8sec., beat
ing the urevious record of
1.3.3 set on December 6
1952, by Gilbert Bozon,
France.
The two recordCs will be
submitted to the Federa
tion Internationale Natation
Associations, the governing
body of world swimming.
for final acceptance.
