TO LET--ONE COUNTRY GAOL,
WITH ALL MOD. CONS.
Gladstone Gaol, the emptiness of which has dis
tressed Mr. Lyons, M.P. (L.C.L., Rocky River), has had
a varied history.
JT has been used as a general
prison. inebriates' home, deten
tion place for young offenders, for
internees, and lately for nothing.
It has accommodation for 60 or
70 prisoners. Mr. Lyons said in
the Assembly this week that war
work should be allocated to Glad
stone to stop the drift of popula
tion, the seriousness of which was
shown by many empty houses,
shops, and the unoccupied gaol.
The gaol Is well built and well
laid out. Up to 10 years ago
some of the wings were used as
a home for inebriates.
As support of this type of client
dwindled away almost to nothing,
it was decided to use the gaol for
convicts of from 18 to 22 years of
age whose relatively good records
indicated that it was undesirable
for them to mix with more hard
ened offenders at Yatala Labor
Prison.
These "boarders" also diminished
in number with the general falling
off in the State's prison popula
tion.
After the outbreak of the war
the military authorities took over
the gaol as an internment centre,
but later the internees were trans
ferred to Victoria.
There are insufficient young
offenders these days to warrant
re-opening the gaol for them.
State officials say that the build
ing could fairly easily be adapted
to military purposes. Otherwise
only the rounds of the caretaker
will arouse the echoes of the
clanking iron doors.
