LLOYD GEORGE A BAPTIST.
In order to finally determine the Rt. Hon.
D. Lloyd George's position in the religious
world our Minister recently wrote to the Rev.
J H. Shakespeare, M.A., secretary of the
Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland.
The following letter has been received from
Mr. Shakespeare and needs no comment:—
Baptist Church House, Southampton Row,
London, W.C. 1, April 26th, 1920. Rev. D.
F. Mitchell. Dear Mr. Mitchell, —I should
have thought that no one would dispute the
fact that Mr. Lloyd George is a Baptist, or
that he is a member of a Baptist Church.
By tradition, his associations have been with
the Church of Christ, Criccieth, in Wales. I
do not, know whether he in a member of that
Church or not. His uncle was before him,
and his parents. But he is an actual member
of the Baptist Church at Castle Street, Lon
don. This Church is in membership with the
Welsh Baptist Union, and Mr, Lloyd George
has been the President, of this Union. I have
in my safe now, in Mr. Lloyd George's hand
writing, a statement that he is a member of
the Baptist Church at Castle Street, London.
He certainly does not hold the views of the
''Church of Christ." Of course the Prime
Minister does not object to be known as a
Baptist. On the contrary, I have heard him
say again and again that he is a Baptist. I
may count myself as a personal friend, and
know him intiniately, and these statements
which you report to me are ridiculous. Be
lieve me, yours very faithfully, (sighed) J.
H. Shakespeare —The Lismore "Baptist
Visitor."
