Close Fight
Likely In
S.A. Elections
ADELAIDE.-There is every
indication that the results
of the State Parliamentary
election on Saturday will bc
close.
The Playford Ministry, which is
now the only non-Labor Govern-
ment in the Commonwealth, is
being strongly challenged by
.Labor, which needs to take only
one seat from the Liberals to
unseat the Government.
On Fédéral election results the
Liberals would win two seats
from Labor and lose one, but past
experience has shown that these
figures cannot be accepted as a
reliable guide to State polls.
In the last Parliament, the
Liberal-Country Party group had.
Iii members, Australian Labor
Party 17, and Independents three.
This means that the Playford
Government had for three years
to rely on the support of the three
independents to get the greater
part of its legislative programme
through.
FeÙerul Ministers, who have
visited South Australia on the
campaign, as well as the Leader
of the State Opposition (Mr.
llichards), have emphasised that
South Australia is the odd State
out in the Commonwealth, and
that success of the Opposition
.would mean full co-operation
throughout the Commonwealth in
'implementing Labor's policy.
The Premier has replied that,
if "singing out of tune" has meant
that he has refused to obey dic-
tates from Canberra, then thc
charge is true.
