MARLULAN.
17th OCTOBER, 1839. }
½ past 3 P. M. }
By the arrival of the mail this day, from Yass
and Goulburn, I have been informed that the
Yass Mail was again robbed betwixt the " Breadal-
bane Plains" and " Pocock's." It appears it was
robbed this time by one man, who boasted he had
perpetrated the former robbery ; and not con-
tented with taking the whole of the Post Office
bags, he also took the Post Carrier's horse, sad-
dle, and bridle. Before he went away he desired
the Carrier to inform the former mail coachman,
that if he (the robber) or any of his gang, caught
him (the coachman) up in that quarter, he would
have his bl—dy head off ; and as to the remains
of the contents of the mail bags, which he (the
robber) took away at the first robbery, they were
to be found with the old mail bags on the top of a
range, near to where the robberies were commit-
ted.
The tenement occupied by " Pretty Sally," ad-
joining Pocock's, and Mr Reddall's shepherds, is
supposed to be the principal harbour for the
rogues. All here express their surprise that Mr.
Commissioner Turner should permit these squat-
ters to remain where they now are, unlicenced.
Of what use are such officers ? What do they
get their salaries for?
The weather was very boisterous on the 9th
instant (the day of the sale of the late Mr. Fut-
ter's furniture and stock.)—Prices of Stock :—8
working bullocks, £110—1 bullock, (good) old
cart and harness, £17—Sheep, 25s. and 26s.
each—Horses, from £43 to £61.
I have nothing to state relative to the crops,
with the exception, that almost all the Barley and
rye are now in ear, and make a beautiful appear
ance. Referring to the Berrima Jury and Quar
ter Sessions Act, I have heard a vast deal of
"grumbling" as to the distance the act empowers
the Sheriff to summon Jurors from, &c. The
"Berrimnites" of Camden. and "Argyleshire men
of loyal and good repute," residing to the north
nod east boundary of Argyle say " The Act ought
to have extended as far as Goulburl, distant 50
miles from Berrima, where reside a great number
of respectable men qualified to sit as Jurors ; and
it is hoped His Excellency the Governor will ex
tend the distarde 10 miles further to the South
ward and westward.
Great losses have been sustained by this second
robbery, and gentietan residing about. here and
adjacent, who have establihhmen's tp the country,
will not attempt to send letters, &c. by the Yass
mail in future, or until the present aggressor has
been apprehended. This last robber, has caused a
great sensation at Goulbourn; and the inhabitants
generally impute great neglect to the Mounted
Police and Constabulary for not seeking after the
perpetrators of the first mail rubbery.
